Mercedes adds ChatGPT to its onboard voice assistant system

The three-month test began for some American drivers this Friday

Mercedes has decided to test the capabilities of ChatGPT for its vehicles. The German manufacturer will deploy the OpenAI chatbot within the MBUX (Mercedes-Benz User Experience) multimedia interface. According to Frandroid, for the moment, only American consumers taking part in a beta test may take advantage of this artificial intelligence (AI) addition to the voice assistant. The aim is to improve the responses provided to the driver. The device is a collaboration with Microsoft Azure OpenAI Service.

Hey Mercedes

To activate the MBUX wizard, simply launch a «Hey Mercedes». The assistant can already answer various queries such as finding sports results, making a weather report or knowing the news. It is even possible to ask the voice assistant to control the connected home.

ChatGPT will not override Mercedes' voice assistant, but increase its capabilities. The user will have more details about a destination, may ask for clarification of certain information but also, for example, receive suggestions of recipes as the car goes to the supermarket. At any time, the driver will be able to keep his hands on the steering wheel and his eyes on the road, as the information will be provided verbally by ChatGPT.

Another version of conversational AI

However, it is important to note that the technology used in Mercedes vehicles will be somewhat different from the ChatGPT version that we know. A chatbot built on GPT will be integrated into MBUX. The data and knowledge transmitted will therefore be significantly different from those proposed by the other versions of the program. In its three-month test, Mercedes may have chosen to configure the onboard AI to focus on the vehicle’s immediate environment and driver assistance, leaving aside other types of functionality. The manufacturer also specified that the data generated by the exchanges between users and the algorithm will be stored in the company’s cloud and anonymised.
