OpenAI makes ChatGPT’s custom instructions accessible to all users. Simple, devilishly effective, but still careful.
The feature called “custom instructions” that was introduced to ChatGPT Plus subscribers in July is now available to all users, including, therefore, free users. Adding these custom instructions allows you to define a ChatGPT profile, on desktop or iOS, and it will apply to all your conversations. Thus, no need to give the same instructions at the beginning of each new conversation, this “profile” is taken into account each time. Simply fill in the relevant fields and see how the answers are adapted.

The “custom instructions” section contains two text fields. One asks what you would like ChatGPT to know about you and provides suggestions – “Where do you live?” , “What do you do?” , etc. -. The other asks how you would like ChatGPT to respond to you – “should ChatGPT have a formal or casual tone?” , “should ChatGPT have an opinion on the topics or remain neutral?” , etc. -.
Simple, devilishly effective, but be careful
It’s an open feature with infinite potential effects. You can almost imagine anything with these custom instructions. But keep in mind that OpenAI has implemented measures so that these instructions cannot be used to violate the rules of use of its service. And if you were wondering what OpenAI does with instructions that might reveal personal information about you, be aware that yes, OpenAI can use this same data, unless you explicitly state that you refuse this, by refusing to record your conversation logs.
So be prepared for this customization of AI-generated content, but never forget to protect your data.
