Elon Musk decided to rename Twitter to X (and make the bluebird disappear). An evil for a good or something?

Elon Musk

Elon Musk seems to have finally decided to rename Twitter. In a series of tweets published this weekend, the American billionaire said that the bird logo and the name of the app will soon no longer exist. The company should simply be called “X”.

And very soon, "we will bid all the birds and the Twitter brand farewell," he added. And add a little later in a Twitter Space that the Twitter logo would be changed this Sunday. This should have been completed a long time ago, he said in response.

A few hours later, he apparently informed employees of this change by email. According to Zoe Schiffer of Plaformer, Elon Musk told the teams that the company was going to become X and that this note “was the last email he would ever send from a Twitter email address.”

Elon Musk has long been known to love the “X” brand. The fintech startup he co-founded in 1999 was called x.com and its recently announced AI company is called xAI. Twitter’s holding company was renamed X Corp last April. Elon Musk also talked about how X could help Twitter become a “do-it-all” app. Although he has provided very little detail on this vast project, many believe that he is referring to apps like WeChat, the most popular app in China that people use for the majority of their daily activities, like payments and shopping, in addition to social connection.

Bad for good or bad?

In any case, abandoning the Twitter brand could be risky enough for Elon Musk. The company is already facing a fairly massive exodus of advertisers, resulting in a loss of over 50% of its advertising revenues. A new brand name could still hurt them. And at the same time, Elon Musk could capitalize on the fact that a new name and a new identity could help the company break ties with its old management and the decisions that had been made at that time, all aspects that Elon Musk often criticized.
