Google: Nest speakers removed from the list of devices compatible with the Fuschia operating system

Finally, Google Nest Audio connected speakers will not have access to the mysterious Fuschia operating system. They are part of the devices officially «not supported» by the Fuschia OS unlike the connected screens Nest Hub.

Nest speakers

Fuschia is Google’s operating system developed for its range of connected objects. It was first deployed in 2021 on the old Nest Hub, Google’s connected screen. Fuschia is currently deployed on the Nest Hub and Nest Hub Max who have abandoned Cast OS. Several sources thought that Google was going to extend Fuschia support to its other devices like Nest Audio connected speakers. That will not be the case.

Last year, Google’s Fuschia team tested operating system support on a single smart speaker. The project had been abandoned and then resumed a little later. The developers of the OS were working on several connected speakers, including a new speaker equipped with the ultra wideband (UWB). We thought Google was going to replace the Cast OS speakers with Fuschia. The giant Mountain View is now backing off.

Processors for Google connected speakers are now “not supported” by Fuschia

Not only will Fuschia never replace Android, but it will also not make Google’s connected speakers run. Our colleagues at 9to5Google have noticed a change in the Fuschia code. They found that all hardware related to the connected speakers was listed as “unsupported”. The code associated with the speakers has even been deleted.

Among the devices rated as “unsupported” is the list of processors that power the Nest Mini, Nest Audio and Nest Wifi. A Nest connected speaker that hasn’t been built yet and smart speakers based on Android Things are also part of this list.

We don’t know why Google no longer intends to support its speakers connected to the Fuschia OS. Apparently there are several reasons. On the one hand, the Amlogic A113L chip used in a mysterious device that could be the Pixel Tablet docking station does not meet Fuschia’s processor requirements. On the other hand, let’s not forget that Google has laid off dozens of employees of the Fuschia team. Of the 400 people on the Fuschia team, 20% have already been fired since the beginning of the year. Fuschia is not completely abandoned, but Google would prefer to limit the OS to connected screens for the moment.
