Bing: chatbot hits Chrome, but amazing restrictions frustrate users

Bing AI finally landed on Google Chrome, but with frustrating limitations: 5 messages per conversation and a cap of 2,000 characters per message. Microsoft consistently recommends Edge for a complete experience.

The new Bing AI, powered by ChatGPT-4, is finally available on Google Chrome. However, the first tests revealed several limitations. Chrome users can only see 5 messages per conversation, while Microsoft Edge users can enjoy up to 30. In addition, the character limit per message on Chrome is 2,000, which is half of the Edge limit of 4,000 characters.

Bing AI: chatbot is finally available on Chrome, but it’s a disappointment

To encourage users to use Edge, Microsoft has set up a small persistent pop-up that appears on the page, inviting users to learn more about AI. By clicking Chat Now, users are redirected to Microsoft Edge, where they can take full advantage of AI technology, without the restrictions imposed on Chrome.

The Bing AI startup page on Chrome highlights some of the additional features offered by Edge, such as longer conversations, a more complete chat history and many other benefits.

Microsoft does not intend to stop there, as the company plans to deploy Bing AI on other browsers, including Apple’s Safari, during the week. The goal is clear: Microsoft wants to attract more people to Edge and its AI, ChatGPT, in response to competition from Google, which announced the creation of Bard for Search in response to the OpenAI ChatGPT initiative.

By integrating ChatGPT into Bing and Edge, Microsoft wants to offer more relevant search results and close the gap with Google in this area. Edge users may also benefit from the Google Bard experiment without these limitations.

It remains to be seen whether Google will respond to this lighter version of Bing AI for Chrome, but the arrival of this AI on Google’s browser marks a new step in the competition between tech giants.
